Freshwater or Saltwater? Which aquarium type is best for you?

Setting up a new aquarium environment is an exciting adventure, but before getting started, you must decide if you’d rather go the freshwater or saltwater route. As a big decision, there are quite a few considerations that should be explored before making your selection. Both saltwater and freshwater tanks are accompanied by rewards and challenges. When choosing your ecosystem, here’s what you need to know:

Cost of Setting Up a New Tank

While there will always be counter examples, saltwater tanks have a tendency to cost more due to maintenance requirements. Saltwater setups require more specialized equipment, so keep that in mind when making your decision. A good idea is to plan what you want to put in your tank, including equipment, filtration, plants, fish and their companions

Aquarium Sizes can Vary

Smaller tanks are easier to care for than large ones, but will have less space for your aquatic pets. There are plenty of options from nano-tank sized to large tanks that can accommodate any type of budding fish hobbyist. When selecting a tank, one also must consider the size and location when weighing the decision between a freshwater or saltwater tank.

Maintaining your Aquarium

Freshwater tanks are generally easier to care of, especially if you are new to the fish keeping hobby. Freshwater inhabitants from lakes, rivers and streams lack the beautiful colors that saltwater fish. They also have tend to be hardier and generally less expensive. As less fragile creatures, we recommend starting with freshwater if you are new to the hobby and graduated as your experience progresses. Here are a few fish freshwater recommendations for those starting off.

Although marine environments can showcase vivid fish, invertabres and living corals, one must keep in mind experience levels and commitment.  For saltwater tanks, one must maintain a stable salinity, pH, and other parameters that require time and expertise. They also require specialized equipment, such as protein skimmers, reef lighting and marine salt.

Freshwater or Saltwater: Which should you choose?

Having a beautiful aquarium grants you access to observe and enjoy a rich underwater environment so different from our own. Before investing in any tank set up, take a visit to your local fish store and talk about your wants and needs. We encourage you to be realistic about creating the perfect aquarium that fits your lifestyle, interests, and budget to ensure your fish tank thrives.
